Cavalry blasts Saints to stay undefeated

James Jones provided the touchdowns.

Corey Roberson provided the stops.

The combination of those two factors led to Wyoming's third victory of the season as the Cavalry beat the Utah Saints 62-7 on Saturday at the Casper Events Center to remain undefeated.

Jones scored touchdowns on the Cavs' first two possessions of the game and added two more in the second half. Jones scored on rushes of 12, 19, 30, and 8 yards -- two of which came from direct snaps.

"Anytime we can run that helps everything out," Wyoming coach Dan Maciejczak said. "It really opens up the passing game."

The Cavs would only need two of those touchdowns for the win because Wyoming's defense had another stellar performance against the Saints.

Wyoming didn't allow Utah to score until midway through the third quarter and got eight interceptions from four different players.

"We did a great job with fundamentals and played sound defense," Maciejczak said.

Roberson led the way for Wyoming with four interceptions, including two in the end zone.

Utah had plenty of chances to score, but nearly every time the Saints were attacking the Cavs came up with a big defensive play. The Saints had first-and-goal three times in the first half but couldn't score on any of them. Wyoming had interceptions on two of those possessions, and forced a long field goal that went wide right on the other.

Wyoming has limited its opponents to 30 points or less in every game this season.

n  PICK SIX: One of the highlights of the first half came early in the second quarter when Cavs defensive lineman Tyrone Saterfield intercepted a pass from Utah quarterback Jeff Wissler and returned it 45 yards up the left sideline for a touchdown.

The touchdown was Saterfield's second of the season to go with a fumble return in the Cavs' first game against the Saints.

n  QB SHUFFLE: Utah played three quarterbacks against the Cavs on Saturday. Jeff Wissler started the game, Mike Affleck played in the second quarter, and Stan Parish played in the third quarter.

Parish had the most success of the three, throwing the Saints' lone touchdown. He connected with Jeff Johnson on a 29-yard pass with 8:21 left in the third quarter.
