It was with interest and amusement that I read the comments Ms. Taylor and Mr. Gagnon made about the Rainbow Family in the Sunday, June 29 Casper Star-Tribune. I had just returned from the Big Sandy area and had personally observed the reality of the Rainbow Family and its impact on the area.

It was clear to the most casual observer that the arrival of the Rainbow Family at Big Sandy had created a vacancy under every railroad bridge in the United States.

Rainbows were observed skinning out a road-killed jack rabbit alongside a dirt road leading to Big Sandy. A Wyoming Game Warden found others fishing without a license. The owner of a summer home caught two Rainbows in his driveway busily loading his firewood into their van. When accosted the Rainbows told him it was the "people's wood" not his. The owner, not being swayed by their argument, convinced the two Rainbows that their safest course of action was to immediately unload and restack the wood and leave never to return. This is the Rainbow Family in action.

Based upon my observations I cannot understand how attending a Rainbow Family gathering could provide a lifetime "inspiration" in the manner of Ms. Taylor's attendance at "Methodist Camp at Meadowlark Lake" unless one aspires to be a thief or a scofflaw. Mr. Gagnon listed fifteen "laudable characteristics" of the Rainbows "that are in short supply in our country" but his list (probably deliberately) did not include honesty and respect for the law. Perhaps Mr. Gagnon observed the same things I did but excuses the Rainbow's dishonesty and disrespect for the law because " ... these people are simply not meek."

Mr. Smith's descriptive comments about the Rainbows in that Sunday's paper are much closer to the mark than those of Ms. Taylor and Mr. Gagnon. Despite the promises the Rainbow Family made to the U.S.Forest Service, the environmental damage these people are inflicting on the Big Sandy area will take many years to repair.

" I agree , we all seen what the potheads did at Woodstock , these rainbow people are whats left of that mess. Somebody missed the boat when they passed out common sense on the decisions to let those weerdos in. "

" I am sorry to hear that some thieves tried to steal some firewood. Clearly, they are not associated with Rainbow which takes places in a forest absolutely filled with downed wood. Likely just common thieves. And, gasp, fishing without a license! Somebody get a rope! "

" This year was my first rainbow family gathering. It was one of the greatest weeks of my life. The rainbow family are the nicest most welcoming people I have ever met. Food and water is free at a rainbow family gathering. There is a donation bucket called the magic hat where you can donate money. Everything at the rainbow family gathering is just groups of people working together. Its really amazing how people can all work as one.

I am really sorry about what a few attendees of the rainbow family gathering have done. However I do not think this is a fair representation of the majority of people who go to rainbow family gatherings. This year over 7000 people came to the rainbow family gathering.

As for clean up, here are the forest services letters on how well the rainbow family has cleaned up there site.

As you can see there all positive. There is even a article from a reporter who went to a gathering site one year later. "

" How terribly judgmental and rude!!
I defy you to prove that *I* as a Rainbow and extremely productive, tax paying (even tho I actually am smart enough to know the Constitution and know the IRS is an illegal entity, I am working with large groups of like minded knowledgeable people on awakening the masses to that fact!) have ever done anything immoral or illegal. I am a respected voting member of my community, a Republican delegate and a believe in the right to bear arms. I research for a living for a very reputable ANC and have a job title a mile long...how DARE you discriminate lie and libel harass and deface myself and other like me who LEGALLY (by State, Federal, CONSTITUTIONAL LAWS) came together to worship, patriotically pray for peace, and communally share understanding and true community lovingly and peaceably with each other have things like THIS said about them...WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE ME? You are not only 100% out of line, you are ride and wrong, and I expect an apology! "

" To : Snake Tongue, It is sweet that you have a job title "a mile long" but maybe your response would come off better if your spelling, grammer, and punctuation would have indicated at least a high school diploma. I hope this doesn't mean you will be expecting an apology from me also. "
