LAS VEGAS -- Joe Glenn is sticking with the formula.
The Wyoming coach has always preferred to take a player from each side of the ball with him to Mountain West Conference Media Days, but lately he's added another element -- one relatively quiet leader to balance out his best talker.
That duty falls to linebacker Ward Dobbs today, who'll play the straight man alongside Devin Moore much the same way Wade Betschart did last year with Michael Medina.
"These guys are going to do well, no doubt about it," Glenn said. "Ward's a little more low-key, but he's thoughtful, insightful, and I think he'll do a great job."
The seniors are equally knowledgeable about the game and were slam-dunk choices for the gig considering their reputations in the locker room.
Like Betschart, Dobbs is a more typical lead-by-example type and clearly more reserved than Moore.
Dobbs talked with the former UW tight end about what to expect in Sin City, but he's mostly trying to keep things simple.
"Not trying to plan ahead, I'd just mess it up," Dobbs said. "If they ask me a question I'll answer it.
"I'm just going to answer the questions and tell the truth."
Neither player has ever been accused of pulling any punches, and Moore's openness is a prized commodity at events like this and with his teammates.
Glenn is typically a media favorite as well, and his nonstop praise of new offensive coordinator Bob Cole figures to carry over from the spring this week.
He won't yet have any answers about the unsettled quarterback situation heading into fall camp, one reason the Cowboys aren't expected to be in the top four when the preseason polls are unveiled today.
"That's part of the deal," Glenn said. "It's part of the game, and I can handle those general questions that you're always going to have.
"I'm ready for it. They don't keep me up at night."
Even without a starter under center, Glenn at least can sleep easy knowing his quarterback on defense has never been in better shape.
Dobbs missed all of spring practice after offseason surgeries, but he'll be ready to go when camp opens and Glenn couldn't be more pleased.
"He's the bell cow," Glenn said. "I'm just so happy because he's perfectly healthy for the first time in his career, and we can turn him loose for his senior year.
"Just look what he's been able to do when he wasn't 100 percent."
Dobbs was plenty productive again last season, though he and the defense haven't been the problem.
The woeful offense should be healthier thanks to the addition of Cole, who's also helping Glenn rest a little easier. The former Florida A&M play-caller energized the entire program during the spring and has created a buzz inside it -- even if it hasn't yet captured imaginations around the league.
That's not a problem for the UW contingent in Las Vegas.
None of the three featured speakers has ever had a problem proving people wrong.
"There's no message in particular," Dobbs said. "We've cleaned up the sloppy stuff we've had in the past, and it should be a pretty good season.
"Pretty much just we've been working hard, and we're ready to play."
And to do more than talk about it.
