LARAMIE -- Citizens of Wyoming and the West wrongly believe global warming is something that will only seriously affect people on the coasts or other areas, state climatologist Steve Gray said.

Gray spoke at the Stroock Forum on Wyoming Lands and People at the University of Wyoming on Monday.

A recent poll, he said, found that 57 percent of Wyoming residents and 51 percent of Westerners think global warming is a bigger threat to others. Gray said Wyoming is instead "extremely vulnerable to climate change, no matter the cause." He added that it represents "a real and serious threat to Wyoming's water."

Seemingly small average temperature increases can generate serious consequences for Wyoming's water resources and economy, Gray said.

Even if precipitation levels in Wyoming do not decline as temperatures increase, he said, higher average temperatures of only 1 to 2 degrees Celsius could reduce the amount of water available in the latter part of the growing season. This scenario would create earlier and faster runoff of water stored as snow in the high mountains and cause more of the state's precipitation to fall as rain instead of snow.

Gray said Wyoming is the fifth-driest state in the nation. Most of its water comes from snowpack stored on 7 percent of the state's land -- the high mountains. Thus, "we have all our eggs in one basket," he said.

Wyoming sits at the top of major watersheds such as the Colorado River Basin, which means, Gray said, a drought has greater impact on the state because shortages here cannot be buffered by excess precipitation elsewhere in the watershed.

Brad Udall, director of the Colorado University-National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency's Western Water Assessment, told about 40 people attending the 11th annual forum that the "vast majority" of the world's scientists agree that human activity has played a significant role in global warming.

Udall said current carbon emissions into the atmosphere are turning out to be greater "than the worst-case scenario" used in one major study.

Both Udall and Gray said today's management systems are based on the assumption that climate changes will not vary significantly from historical patterns. Udall said it would be a mistake to continue to assume climate "stationarity," because "we know those records from the past are less and less true."

Udall showed photos of Lake Mead that indicated storage has dropped by a half in recent years. He said the mean annual temperature in the Lower Colorado River states has risen 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1970, and he predicted that the heat will cause Arizonans to move to Colorado and Wyoming in the near future.

Udall and Gray also agreed that climate change is playing a role in the pine bark beetle epidemic. Gray presented maps showing large areas of tree kill in British Columbia and northern Colorado and said it was moving into Wyoming. Higher temperatures allow more beetles to survive the winter, then have a second life cycle in the summer, Udall said.

The tree kill and warmer temperatures create more fires, and the loss of the forests leads to faster runoff with more sediment, Gray said.

Larry MacDonnell of Boulder, Colo., a visiting professor in the UW College of Law this semester, noted that the legal system for regulating water use is based on "first in time, first in right," without giving major significance to the question of how the water is being used.

He said the North Platte River is fully appropriated already and is being impacted by decreasing runoff and increasing demand.

"The best thing we can do in water management is reduce new demands for water," he said.

One way to help address the water shortage problem is to store water underground -- to avoid evaporation loss -- in wet years, then reserve that water for drought years, he said.

Another event in the Stroock Forum will occur in Pinedale later this fall.

" Now the the Earth is entering a completely normal cooling phase, and solar activity is in a completely normal dormant period, we can expect (also completely normal) decreases in global temperatures.

I guess these "scientists," can always claim "new data" so they can quickly change their minds, when they start their fear mongering about how the Earth is heading into another ice age (again), in order to get funding for "more studies."

On a side note, I see South Africa (an area of the globe now entering their spring months), are experiencing a winter wonderland right now, heavy snowfall, and areas experiencing their coldest September nights in recorded history.

Better put in those government grant requests for more fear mongering "studies" about the coming ice age and the end of the world by Jack Frost, a little sooner than expected, "scientists."

" Why is this some kind of political, ideological issue?
I would bet that not a one of you "debunkers" is a climatologist let alone a scientist. Science is a discipline that takes a theory and then carries out rigorous experimentation to prove or disprove that theory. Measuring change and cause of that change of the climate of an entire planet is a daunting task. A large number of scientists are doing their best to get a handle on this because it has grave implications for our future if true. It would be wise to be open minded on this and at least err on the side of caution.

Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are not scientists. They have a political agenda. I have seen how they have deliberately manipulated the facts in my own area of scientific expertiseenough to suspect that they don't always know what they are talking about in other scientific areas. The far left has also done a lot of manipulation of fact as well.

Even as lay persons you certainly have a right to doubt scientific conclusions. Scientists give us their best judgment but they still may be wrong. However, to lack an understanding of science and do so with such absolute certainty suggests that you are both ignorant and fools.

A recent study (see Yahoo today) said that the people of Wyoming are not open to new ideas. You are helping prove that conclusion. "

" Wyoming and the gop greed mongers have done their best to make our state a major source of global warming. Poor management in the Pinedale anticline has allowed unrestricted emissions of ozone creating toxins locally. The coal burning power plants in the Powder River basin have been spewing tons of particulate pollutants daily along with mercurey fallout in South Dakota. McCain/Loomis/Enzi/Barrasso and others only care about their financial backers and not the long term consequences. Vote these people out and let's get our act together. "

" The greatest affect we will see is over crowding.

As the water rise around the world high ground will be the refuge for humanity.

Wyoming is pretty high country compared to the coasts and the Mississippi valley states down south.

Buy real estate now and you'll be selling it at a very high price in the coming years.

Thank you Al Gore for inventing man-made global warming! You'll make many of us all very rich so we'll be just like you (except not so fat). "

Walla Walla wrote on Sep 23, 2008 5:12 PM:

" Wyoelkhunter, Al Gore and many of the proponents of man-made global warming are not scientists either and this "crisis" forwards their political agendas and fattens their wallets too.

Why don't we non-scientists, to include the "luminaries" that have entered the fray let the real scientists settle the matter. Many have piped up on both sides of the issue to date and no hard and fast answer has been laid out for all to see.

In the mean time, it sure wouldn't hurt to clean up our environmental act, save more irreplacable fossil fuel and try to be a bit more gentle on the planet that does after all support all life here due to its complex processes that evolved over lots and lots of time passing unifluenced by mankind.

The scare tactics telling all that we must stop activities A, B and C this year or we're all doomed just don't work well with the human mind, and generally just make those yelling these threats look foolish when they don't come to pass on day X. "

Which side will make ME rich wrote on Sep 26, 2008 8:40 AM:

" There are compelling arguments on either side of this argument. For the sake of simplicity, I think both sides would agree that the sun is the driving factor behind global climate. There are 11 yr solar cycles that include maximums & minimums in solar activity. These observations have been made ever since scientists trained telescopes on the sun to count sunspots. I'm guessing that Carbon Dioxide emissions have some effect, but it is likely to be miniscule compared to the effects of solar activity. It would be interesting to see estimates for how much heat is reflected by greenhouse gases compared to how much radiation is being emitted by the sun. All politics aside, this argument is clearly not settled. You can't determine consensus by the number of scientists on each side, because research money comes from government agencies and rich private sources, both of which have agendas. The wonderful thing about this theory is that over time it will be either proven or disproven, the main reason why science is infinitely more fulfilling than politics. "

Agree With Which Side wrote on Sep 26, 2008 4:39 PM:

" I also want to hear from the scientists both sides. However i do not want to hear from those who are not.

It seems as though any one who can make a buck, any one with a degree from basket weaving to sociology believes they are equal in what they spout as the real scientists in climate studies.

Perhaps if the waters were less muddied by the isodopes we could have actual clear data to look at. "

" What both sides?
It is well and thoroughly documented that ExxonMobile has funded some 40 organizations with over $20 million to sow doubt and confusion about whether global warming is or is not caused by burning fossil fuels.
The web site ExxonExposed has documentation of where the money has gone and for what.
Meanwhile, REAL scientists (not the hacks and mouth pieces bought off by Exxon) have long reached consensus that global warming is real, it is accelerating and is attributable to people burning fossil fuels.
Virtually any time you find a scientist, a think tanker, a politician nay-saying the human cause of global warming, a wee bit of homework on the Internet will unearth links to Exxon or other Big Energy companies or the free market think tanks.
It really is that simple. "

" "It is well and thoroughly documented that ExxonMobile has funded some 40 organizations with over $20 million to sow doubt and confusion about whether global warming"

And we know that scientists promoting the global warming cult, are receiving millions in government grants (government welfare for "scientists" to lame to get real jobs in the private sector), and payoffs from leftists, IE NASA's James Hansen getting money from the "Heinz Foundation," and possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars from convicted felon and the Demo Undergrounds favorite leftist, George Soros, depending on which media outlets you believe.

Then we have Hansen's research being laughed at worldwide when climate blogger Steve McIntyre exposed the amateurish errors in Hansen's/NASA's vaunted research about Hansen's so-called end of the earth, in McIntyre's blog "Climate Audit," which was named the "best science blog" in 2007. "

Inky wrote on Sep 29, 2008 1:11 PM:

" Dear Debunker,
Please explain how a Bushco administration is funding this global warming "cult," when this administration has such extreme hostility toward Kyoto, Gore, the IPCC, Hansen, the UN, the EU, etc.?
The White House tried and failed to quiet James Hansen, and McIntyre is a quibbler. "

I agree...... wrote on Sep 29, 2008 4:07 PM:

" As usual inky the hack ignores the hard comments and atempts to carry on the one sided bias to another. Way to go inky unless you agree with me that your side does the same as you accuse the other side of doing. "
