Editor:

Voters should heed the Founders' -- including Washington's -- warnings against "entangling alliances with foreign nations." On the televised debates between VPs and president candidates, I witnessed a giddy scrambling, "Me too, but more so," when it came to foreign policy, instantly defined as "protecting Israel."

McCain essentially said he would commit to spending limitless soldiers, arms, and wealth, permanently, to that notion of foreign policy because, "She's our best ally," etc. Favorite may be a better word. (He did mention Russia. Otherwise, the whole globe was pretty much neglected.)

Obama, I was relieved, seemed to have some reservations about carte blanc commitments to Israel. I question his honesty here, know nothing about what he'd do under pressure, and I doubt he cares for the Founders' ideas.

Also, some say his version of allies may radically differ from the others, including Joe Biden's. If it is fair to go around saying "W" or "Dubya," then it's OK to say Hussein, respectively and respectfully.

I exhort our "keep religion out of government" types to question the evangelical-fundamental-AIPAC entanglements. I'm not convinced Ezekiel, Daniel, Or Revelation are mandates for Christians or Jews to steer North American policies in 2008. The post-1948, secular, socialist, Zionist, state called Israel may have little connection to the pre-70 AD version.

As to any secular, pragmatic value of calling Israel a great ally, I say, "Where's the beef." I know where the pork is. The trade towers fell. USS Liberty was bombed Osama still walks. A common U.S. soldier found Saddam. I tire of the standard, boilerplate answer: "Well, she does gobs of good for us. We just can't say what it is."

Taxation without representation? What would the Sons of Liberty think about the liberty or lifespan of our sons while we entangle them to foreign allies who always say "more" but seldom say "thanks," or, better, "We can take care of ourselves now?"

When saying "national security" we should specify which nation.

DENNIS BROSSMAN, Lander

" I do not understand are you against Israel and an anti Semite or just against helping a country that would probably not exist if we did not help (no one else will). In regards to if they represent the 70 CE Israel or previous era what point does that make.

We are not the same as we were in 1776 either so what is the point. At least someone is helping Israel not murdering them as evident in the last 2000 plus years nor are they being anti Semite for the most part in this country any more (even though there are a lot of exceptions).

While I believe neither party represents the people here you lost me on the rest. Perhaps you will elaborate.

Banded calf appears to understand but I am not sure how many bottles of t-bird one needs to consume to get it. Perhaps he will enlighten us during a moment of sobriety.

So if you will take the time to further explain what you mean I would appreciate it. Banded calf may try to do it for you (not) but I trust his opinion about as far as I could throw my truck. "

" Let's see: Protect the only real democratic country in the region surrounded by water and much larger theocracies, or, as the Iranian President would want; let Israel get wiped off the face of the Earth. Sorry folks, that's an easy choice. "

" Oh banded calf aka steer (with a little s) Close Range: Wyoming Stories by Annie Proulx is where the story Brokeback Mountain comes from. But you did not know that as it is not out in comic book form yet. Quit plugging the movie I do not care even though you were one of the main stars. "

" By the way banded calf are you an anti Semite bigot also? Is your robe and hood clean and hanging in the closet?? Do you and Dennis attend the same meetings where a Semite would not be welcome at (like me)??

We can send money to everyone who hates us except Israel who are actually allies??

Nothing to say about the Sons of Liberty who are similar to those called freedom fighters now by some and terrorists by others??

Can you put the t-bird down long enough to give an answer with some cognitive coherent value??

Or are you going to do as usual for a bovine chew cud from the north end orifice and speak from the orifice in the south end of your pathetic self.

Go ahead and enlighten us with those Wyoming values you know so well like the Equality State and all that. Would that be too much to ask that just once you attempt to show us you have an IQ above zero along with the ability to honestly debate something??? "
