CHEYENNE: Highway patrol exhibit
As the Wyoming Highway Patrol celebrates its 75th anniversary, an exhibit at the Wyoming State Museum explores the agency's history.
The Highway Patrol was established during the summer of 1933 with a staff of just seven officers. Then, many families had only recently purchased their first car and rural highway travel was not yet common. There were no interstate highways, and many roads were still unpaved. A single officer covered up to four counties my himself. The average work day was 10 hours, and patrolmen often worked seven days a week.
Today, the patrol numbers close to 370 men and women, which includes 207 uniformed troopers and another 160 support staff.
The exhibit features a patrolman's uniform from the 1950s alongside a current-day uniform. It also includes photographs illustrating the Patrol's development and a display of vintage hand guns, badges and other artifacts.
Visitors can also see a 19-minute video presentation about the Highway Patrol's first 75 years. The video includes on-camera interviews with several Patrol employees, including Maj. Art Reese of Cheyenne whose service with the agency dates back to 1940. Today, at age 96, Reese is the oldest surviving former Patrol officer.
Augmenting the State Museum exhibit will be the Patrol's fully restored 1954 Buick Special. The car will be parked intermittently throughout the summer just outside the museum's main entrance on Central Avenue.
* When: Shows through SEPT. 30.
* Where: Wyoming State Museum, 2301 Central Ave.
