Cheyenne student's art displayed on Capitol Hill

Artwork by Cameron Hernandez, a second grader who lives with his family in Cheyenne, decorated the halls of the Historic Russell Senate Building this week. His was one of 25 pieces picked in the The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) art contest. The organization is the country's leading nonprofit supporting families of military personnel.

"Hundreds of Americans will walk the historic halls of Capitol Hill and be reminded of the courage and patriotism demonstrated everyday by our servicemen and women and their families," said Frank Gallo, ASYMCA national executive director, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.). "The ASYMCA is proud to share these students' heartfelt expressions of pride in their families and their country. I hope the exhibit will inspire Americans to give back to military families that sacrifice so much."

Hernandez, 7, son of Staff Sgt. Charles Hernandez, was the first-place winner in the Air Force category. As part of his award, Hernandez received a $100 U.S. savings bond for his artwork illustrating his military family.

The art contest, asked children of servicemen and women from all branches of the military to submit illustrations of their military families. In addition to the exhibit on Capitol Hill, winning pieces will be featured on a poster for Military Family Month in November, which will be distributed to members of Congress and the Department of Defense, and displayed on ASYMCA's Web site.
