LAS VEGAS - Five-time world champion tie-down roper Cody Ohl won the third round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Saturday night, finishing just four-tenths shy of his NFR record.
Ohl, from Hico, Texas, had a time of 6.9 second. Seven-time world champion Fred Whitfield of Hockley, Texas, was second in 7.1.
"I was riding a new horse (in rounds one and two) I bought a month ago," Ohl said. "Luke (the horse Ohl usually rides) has been sore in his heels and I really didn't have any confidence. I practiced on him three days ago, and we've been working on him every day since and got him back feeling good. It was time for a swap. It wasn't working, so I cracked him out tonight and it was the right mixture."
Tyson Durfey of Colbert, Wash., followed a second-place finish in the first round and a first-place effort during in the second with a sixth-place finish in 8.6. Durfey lead the average at 23.50 for three rounds.
Josh Peek of Pueblo, Colo., leads the world standings with $153,771. Hunter Herrin of Apache, Okla., fourth in 7.3 in the round, remained second with $141,422.
In saddle bronc riding, Billy Etbauer of Edmond, Okla., extended his PRCA standings lead by finishing first with an 89.5 on Blue Too. The 45-year-old Etbauer, a five-time world champion, has earned $177,422. Cody Wright of Milford, Utah, who had an unsuccessful ride in round two, remained second with $155,198.
"You just have to ride well and hopefully things will come around, and I'll just see what happens," said Etbauer, who is trying to tie the record of six world titles held by Casey Tibbs and Dan Mortensen. "I just feel honored to be here and ride with these kids. It's just a blessing for me to be here."
In steer wrestling, 2006 world champion Dean Gorsuch, (Eastern Wyoming), of Gering, Neb., won in 3.5 seconds.
"The thing I learned (from 2006) is no matter where you're sitting, you just go out and try to win the round every night and the average just happens," Gorsuch said. "The two mess-ups I made in the first and second rounds are hopefully he only mess-ups I'm going to have this week. That's what we're trying for."
World leader Luke Branquinho of Los Alamos, Calif., was third in 3.8 and stayed in first for the third consecutive day.
In bareback riding, world leader Steven Dent of Mullen, Neb., remained in first place by tying for fourth with a score of 83.5 on Real Deal. Royce Ford of Briggsdale, Colo., won with an 88.5 on Full Baggage and moved from sixth to fourth in the standings.
In barrel racing, world leader Lindsay Sears of Canada increased her lead to over $51,000 over second-place Brittany Pozzi-Pharr of Victoria, Texas, by winning the third round in 13.91. Pozzi-Pharr tied for second in 13.94 with Maegan Reichert of Mount Pleasant, Texas.
In bull riding, standings leader Chance Smart of Philadelphia, Miss., remained in first with $179,917 after tying for first at 91.5 on Scoundrel. Douglas Duncan of Huntsville, Texas, tied with Smart on War Zone. Smart and Duncan were the only riders out of the 15 competitors to have successful rides.
