FISH
Ice and fishing conditions reported Tuesday. Check ice thickness and use extreme caution on the ice. Conditions can change daily.
Platte River Region
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will begin a series of flushing flows in the North Platte River out of Gray Reef Reservoir in the early morning hours beginning Monday. Flows currently at 500 cfs will increase to 4,000 cfs and then gradually decrease each day, with the maximum flow occurring between 3-7 a.m. It will be repeated each day through Friday. The flows below Gray Reef Dam will then be stabilized at about 500 cfs for the rest of the month.
Wyoming Game and Fish requested the flushing flows to clean sediments from fish spawning habitats and increase production of invertebrates that fish depend on for food. The flushing flow will also move more water into side channels, which are important nurseries for fry and juvenile fish.
- Robin Kepple, Casper office of Wyoming Game and Fish
Bright sunlight and crystal clear water have slowed the good trout fishing a little on the Gray Reef of the North Platte River. The fishing's been inconsistent, so change flies often. The best patterns have been black midges, egg patterns, brown leeches and red San Juan worms.
- Bob Fischer, Ugly Bug Fly Shop in Casper
Anglers are now able to launch boats at Alcova Reservoir where the trout fishing is fair using minnows, jigs and spoons.
- Austin Lovato, Sportsman's Warehouse in Casper
Glendo Reservoir is a mix of open water and ice. A few anglers launched boats over the weekend and the fishing was good for some, slow for others. Good reports included catches of walleye on jigs and minnows, as well as some perch and catfish. There isn't much open water for boating yet. Anglers are catching some catfish in the North Platte River upstream from Glendo.
- Bob Shelver, Curly's Leisure Sports in Douglas, and Rob Davis, Wyoming Walleye Circuit
Around the state
Fly fishing is good on the Lower Shoshone River in Cody using midge emergers and dries, parachute Adams and Griffith's gnats. The ice is coming off other local streams but most still have a ways to go.
The ice is breaking up on East Newton Lake, which should have open water to fish very soon. The ice is unsafe at Luce and Hogan reservoirs. The South Fork Abatement Dike has some open water that's fishable.
- Tim Wade, North Fork Anglers in Cody
In the southwest, Flaming Gorge Reservoir still has lots of ice but ice anglers should watch out for weak spots along the edges. Ice fishing is good at night using jigs tipped with sucker meat for burbot. Anglers are also catching lake and rainbow trout on jigs tipped with worms or marshmallows.
Trout fishing on the Hams Fork below Kemmerer City Reservoir is starting to pick up.
- Robb Keith, fisheries biologist, Green River office of Wyoming Game and Fish
In the Jackson region, trout fishing is picking up on the main stem of the Snake River. There's good dry-fly action on midges in the afternoons. Good reports are also coming from the South Fork of the Snake from anglers using shrimp patterns and streamers.
- Micah Kruger, Jack Dennis Sports in Jackson
