FISH
Regulation changes coming: Anglers around the state will have several new fishing regulations to follow after Jan. 1. The new regs include some significant changes. Refer to the 2008-2009 state fishing regulations booklet, which is expected to be available after Christmas at Wyoming Game and Fish offices or online at http://gf.state.wy.us. Anglers also will need to pick up a new license and conservation stamp prior to fishing in 2008.
North Platte Region
Ice is forming in coves at Alcova Reservoir but it's still unsafe for ice fishing. Anglers are doing very well fishing open water using marshmallows, Power Bait and worms for trout.
Pathfinder Reservoir has 12 inches or better of ice. Ice fishing is a little slow for trout but some anglers are doing OK using minnows.
- Yolanda Strand, Sloane's General Store in Alcova
Trout fishing is good on the Gray Reef of the North Platte River though cold weather may slow it down a little from time to time. The usual subsurface stuff is working best: leeches, rock worms and egg patterns.
- Richard Diesburg, Ugly Bug Fly Shop
Southeast
The west end of Lake Hattie is partially open water but there's 4 to 7 inches of ice near the dam. Trout fishing is good using jigs, assorted lures, Power Bait, salmon eggs and mealworms. The ice is about 4- to 6-inches thick at Alsop, Gelatt, Leazenby, Meeboer, Sodergreen and Twin Buttes where the fishing is mostly fair.
- West Laramie Fly Store in Laramie
Northwest
The Lower Shoshone is fishing great through Cody. Midge hatches are providing good dry-fly fishing using Griffith's gnats and para-midges for trout. Streamers are working well too. The Lower Clark's Fork is fishing well near the hatchery using streamers and midge pupas for trout.
- Chip Andrews, North Fork Anglers in Cody
Southwest
The ice is a good 6 inches at Fontanelle Reservoir. Ice fishing is good for brown trout, rainbows and burbot. The burbot tend to be along the rocky eastern shore.
Big Sandy and Viva Naughton have had ice forming and the fishing should be getting good soon.
No recent reports on the ice at Sulfur Creek Reservoir, but it should be a good spot for trout and walleye in the coming days and weeks.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir has ice and open water. Anglers are doing very well for rainbow trout, but not so great for lake trout yet. The Firehole area and Upper Black Fork Arm are iced over and are both good spots to go after burbot.
For now, daily limits on walleye and burbot in Area 4 are 25 per day. The bag limit in that area will be unlimited for walleye and burbot starting Jan. 1 in an effort to remove them from the area's waters. Refer to the state's fishing regulations booklet for details.
Use extreme caution when ice fishing and check the ice thickness to make sure it's safe.
