FISH

Ice and fishing conditions reported Tuesday. Check ice thickness and use extreme caution on the ice, which is getting thin on some lakes. Conditions can change daily.

Casper Region

Ice fishing season is winding down on most lakes. Glendo Reservoir has lots of open water and the ice is melting at Alcova and Pathfinder reservoirs. Before too long boating season will be starting. Right now the best fishing in the Casper region is on the North Platte River.

- Jake Sabus, Sportsman's Warehouse in Casper

Trout fishing is good on the Gray Reef of the North Platte River using leech patterns, scuds, RS2s, red rock worms and midges. The river is clear and mostly ice-free from Gray Reef Dam to Government Bridge, cloudy with some areas of ice farther downstream.

- Mark Boname, Platte River Fly Shop in Casper

Northwest

Fly fishing for trout remains good on the Lower Shoshone River through Cody using para-Adams, olive sparkle duns, snowshoe emergers, Griffith's gnats, zebra midges and North Fork specials.

The ice is melting fast at East Newton Lake and it should have open water soon. Most of the ice is off Buffalo Bill Reservoir where a 30-pound lake trout was caught a couple of weeks ago.

For ice fishing, there's still more than 2 feet of ice on most lakes of the Beartooth Mountains. Hop on a snowmobile or put on some snowshoes to trek up to the high country where brook trout are hitting jigs and wooly buggers through the ice.

- Tim Wade, North Fork Anglers in Cody

Southeast

Most of Lake Hattie is open water though some people are still ice fishing along the edges. That's not recommended because the ice is unsafe. Fishing is good using Super Dupers for perch and egg sacks for rainbows.

Meeboer Lake is fair to good using ice jigs tipped with meal worms or wax worms. The ice is 6 to 12 inches thick but watch for thin spots near the aerator.

A snowmobile ride to Lake Owen, Rob Roy Reservoir or alpine lakes of the Snowy Range leads to some very good ice fishing for trout. Use jigs, spoons, night crawlers, Power Bait, meal worms and wax worms.

- West Laramie Fly Store in Laramie
