Two cows in Sublette County may be infected with brucellosis, the Wyoming Livestock Board said today.

Both cows came from a single herd near Daniel.

If the infection is confirmed through further testing, it'll be the first confirmed incidence in Wyoming cattle since the state regained its federal brucellosis-free status in the fall of 2006.

The livestock board said this week's news won't automatically cause the state to lose the brucellosis-free status again, as it did in 2004.The state would need to go two more years without an additional case to maintain the status, however.

The discovery of possible brucellosis in Wyoming cattle comes just days after a cow in southern Montana tested positive for the disease, which causes cattle to abort their first calves.
