DALLAS - Police say a former Utah state trooper sought in Texas on robbery and burglary warrants shot himself during a standoff in the Dallas area.

Garland police say 37-year-old Brian Smith was in critical condition Tuesday at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

Garland police were notified by police in Keller to be on the lookout for Smith and that he was armed. A vehicle driven by Smith was located Monday night.

Garland police say a gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle as Smith, after several hours, attempted to drive away.

Police did not immediately provide further details on the warrants.

Utah Dept. of Public Safety Sgt. Jeff Nigbur (NY'-bur) says Smith had been a trooper since 1996, mainly in the Salt Lake City area. Smith was a sergeant when he resigned in May.

Nigbur says Smith had some personal issues and that "law enforcement was not an option for him at the time." Nigbur declined to elaborate.
