A two-vehicle crash in icy Wind River Canyon killed a Thermopolis woman, injured four others and closed the highway through the canyon for an hour Thursday night.
Marcia Kirsch, 57, died at the scene of the crash at 6:25 p.m. on U.S. Highway 20 about 16 miles north of Shoshoni, the Wyoming Highway Patrol reports.
Kirsch was a passenger in a 2005 Chevy pickup driven by James Kirsch, 64, according to the patrol. Headed south, Kirsch lost control of the pickup, and it went into a broadside slide. It crossed the center line and was hit on the passenger door by a 2001 Jeep SUV driven by Robert Spain, 57, of Riverton. Both vehicles came to rest against the canyon wall.
The highway was closed for an hour as victims were extricated from the vehicles, the patrol said.
Spain and his wife, Collette, were taken by ambulance to Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis, then airflifted to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
James Kirsch was hospitalized in Thermopolis. A passenger in the Spain vehicle, Peggy Forgey, 61, of Thermopolis was also hospitalized there.
