Casper Fire/EMS and Natrona County Fire Department crews worked Friday morning to contain more than a mile of spilled diesel fuel.

A tanker, possibly leaving a business near the intersection of Poplar and Collins streets, left a trail of the slippery fuel from Poplar Street to Yellowstone Highway.

Casper Fire/EMS officer Justin Smith said that most likely a truck either transporting or delivering the diesel lost a cap on its tank. The trail began near Poplar and Collins streets and followed down Collins Street, through Mills and onto West Yellowstone Highway.

Smith didn't report any injuries or accidents related to the incident.

The fire department received two calls, both around 8 this morning, reporting fuel in the road.

Smith said because diesel is particularly hazardous on concrete, the fire department also needed to divert traffic away from the covered areas.

"The oil content in the diesel acts like ice when its on concrete," Smith said. "And it doesn't evaporate like gasoline does."

Smith believes none of the diesel leaked into the storm water drainage system and will be contained in sand.

Once the fuel is absorbed in the sand it will go to the landfill to be treated, said David Jordan, the special waste and diversion supervisor for the city.

The fire department had not located the truck as of 8:30 this morning, but Smith said he expected to know who was driving shortly.
