"Schools of choice" is among terms the Natrona County school board has decided not to define.

Trustees finished the definitions at their work session Monday evening. The board will use its definition for open enrollment if the term "schools of choice" comes into conversation.

Other terms not defined were "data driven decision making" and "school boundaries." A few other terms were slightly reworded to keep education philosophy separate from the definitions.

Defining the terms is just a smaller piece of the board's work to begin a community wide discussion about choice in Natrona County.

A retreat is scheduled on Sept. 22 for trustees to discuss the board's interests about enrollment.

Trustees several times started deeper discussions about enrollment in Natrona County before reminding each other the definitions are not policy, and are only a way to put everyone on the same page.

"It's hard to remember what we are doing here," Trustee Linda Nix said. "We want to get into the deep conversation."

In other business, trustees heard an update about assessment data around growth tests and Adequate Yearly Progress. The board also approved:

*Two federal grants, one from the U.S. Department of Education Safe Schools/Healthy Schools in the amount of $1.1 million and the other from the Carol M. White Physical Education Program for $1.4 million over three years.

*A series of facilities requests, including asphalt replacement and repair at Dean Morgan Junior High, and Grant and Verda James elementary schools, and roof replacements at Crest Hill and Grant elementary schools, Centennial Junior High and the Fairdale gym.
