Festivals, rides highlight busy weekend

Enjoy open-air festivals in Casper and Glenrock. Ride your scooter - and wear pink; take a ride in a big rig or ride your three-wheeled trike with friends.

There is plenty of activity for everyone this weekend in central Wyoming.

The half-size replica Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the "Wall That Heals," is open for viewing on the grounds of Fort Caspar 24 hours a day until late afternoon Sunday.

Festivals

The Platte River Parkway Trust is hosting its annual Fall Festival from noon to 5 p.m. in the parking lot between Mike Lansing Field and Crossroads Adventure Playground. This year's Festival will feature a BBQ Feast, great live music, and microbrew tasting, as well the chance to buy a duck in the Great Duck Derby and win prizes.

The Fall Festival is a family event with face painting, balloon tying and two story times. All proceeds from the festival go to the renovation of the Tate Pumphouse to create indoor public restrooms, outdoor plaza, trail center, bike/kayak vendor space and restaurant.

Join Meadow Wind Assisted Living, 3955 E. 12th, across from Kelly Walsh High School, for a day in the sun with food and music to celebrate its 10th anniversary from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Seniorstock" is an outdoor carnival with live music by The Avengers and Pat Grace, hot dogs, cotton candy, and drinks.

Valentine Speedway, one mile west of Glenrock on the old Glenrock Highway, will host a 9-11 Tribute beginning at noon.

A concert, featuring Brian Ragsdale, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. A hearty barbecue will be catered by the Revitalization Association of Main Street will feature roasted turkey legs, barbecued brisket, grilled brats, potato salad, barbecue beans and roasted ears of corn.

Races start at 4 p.m., featuring sprint cars, mini sprints and dwarf cars. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 children and will be sold at the gate.

Rides

The first Hooters on Scooters run takes place today from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting at Casper Mountain Motorsports with stops at Poorboys, Remax and the eastside WAC. There is a $30 entry fee with 75 percent going to local breast cancer awareness groups and 25 percent to the winner of the best hand. Participants must wear pink.

Don and Loretta Bentz are offering rides in big rig trucks at 8 a.m., today at Bentz's Town Pump, 701 W. Collins, for anyone of any age who wants to get the feel of long-haul trucking. Riders will ride a 13-block loop for a donation.

Money raised will provide gasoline for Meals on Wheels delivery drivers, many of whom are struggling with the rising prices of fuel.

Brothers of the Third Wheel, a nonprofit organization that promotes trikes and triking, will gather at Casper's Good Cookin' restaurant at 10 a.m., for coffee and socializing. At 12:45 p.m., they will meet at the American Legion Club on Legion Lane for a memorial ride to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall at Fort Caspar. Anyone interested in trikes or triking is welcome.

Help available

After a break for the summer, the monthly meetings of the Kids' Support Group meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Central Wyoming Hospice, 319 S. Wilson, for water balloon volleyball and pizza. The Kids' Support Group meets the second Saturday of the month throughout the school year. Kids age 6-16 who have experienced the death of someone important in their lives are encouraged to attend. Parents also are welcome.

Safe Kids of Central Wyoming invite parents to a free car seat check from 10 a.m.-noon at Fire Station #1 (on the corner of First and David Streets). The child, the car seat and the vehicle that the child is normally transported must all be present for the check, with the exception of expectant mothers. Certified technicians will check and educate parents on the correct installation and usage of seats.

With the family

The Astronaut will be shown at 7 p.m. today at the Casper Planetarium, 904 N. Poplar St. Dawn of the Space Age will be shown at 8 p.m. Admission for each show is $2.50 per person. For more information, call 577-0310.

Faith Assembly of God, 4301 Casper Mountain Rd., hosts a free movie at 7 p.m., complete with concessions and copies of the movie on DVD given away. "Hidden Secrets," is a new release starring John Schneider and Reginald Vel Johnson. The movie is a story of friendship, redemption, love and faith. For more information, call 265-9121.

Sunday

The Natrona County Suicide Prevention Task Force is hosting the fourth annual "Morning Has Broken" walk for suicide prevention at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Crossroads Park. There will be various musical groups providing entertainment along the way. People of all ages are welcome to join in this event to raise awareness and prevention about suicide prevention.

The monthly jam session will be held at the Eagles Hall, 306 N. Durbin, from 3 to 8 p.m. The session will raise funds for the Eagles Charities and will be held to honor one the group's supporters, Ray Patterson, who died suddenly on Sept. 5.
