The finalists for Natrona County's superintendent position visited area schools on Wednesday, and liked what they saw.
"The school district is doing wonderful things," said finalist Denise Birdwell. "What's really exciting is that they're challenging, they're always raising the bar and looking to be better at what they do."
Finalists had a chance to visit with principals, teachers, students and parents before taking part in Wednesday evening's public forum. The forum, held in Kelly Walsh High School's auditorium, drew a crowd of about 100 people.
"The process set up here is a really fair and equitable process," said Birdwell, assistant superintendent for Higley Unified School District in Gilbert, Ariz. "It's a great way to get to know the community."
On Thursday, Birdwell and fellow finalist Larry Parsons said it appeared Natrona County is on the cutting edge in the education world.
"I was very impressed with the schools that I saw," said Parsons, superintendent of the Selah School District in Selah, Wash. "The district certainly looks like it's in strong shape."
Parsons cited well-kept buildings and welcoming staff members as indicators of his appeal for the job.
"It's exactly the kind of district I thought it would be," he said. "All the buildings had a really nice feel to them."
Finalist Joel Dvorak, who currently works for Natrona County School District, said he thought the forum and visits went well. However, he did wish more students had been at the forum to share their voices and concerns.
"I was pleased that people came out in the slippery streets and rough weather," Dvorak said. "I very much value the input of the community.
"I really think that we are a school district on the edge of greatness," Dvorak continued. "I think that if we engage our community in setting a clear mission and goals, and work with all our resources, we can become great."
Superintendent Jim Lowham announced his retirement in 2006, and his contract officially ends in June.
The superintendent search committee is in the process of reviewing the candidates and hopes to name a selection by early March.
