A Casper man and teenager charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder pled not guilty at an arraignment hearing Monday in Natrona County District Court.
Jonathan Jermain Jelsma, 21, and Juan Carlos Diaz, 16, are each being held on $100,000 bond after the July death of Casper resident Johnny Shane Moody.
A third man, Jeffrey Lee Carter, is charged with second-degree murder in Moody's death. According to police affidavits and witness reports, Carter, 45, fatally stabbed Moody on the evening of July 18 following an argument.
Moody was found laying partially under a truck in alley near the 700 block of A Street, across from the Topper Motel. He had no pulse and was later pronounced dead at the Wyoming Medical Center.
According to testimony from Det. Stacia Francisco, a witness told police Carter and Moody had been arguing about a woman who accused Moody of trying to sexually assault her a few days before.
The woman, who is in her late 20s, did not report the alleged assault to police.
At some point during the evening, the woman apparently punched Moody. When Moody pushed her, a group of two to four men began punching and kicking him.
Diaz and Jelsma told police they participated in Moody's assault, and their attorneys maintain there is no evidence their clients wanted Moody stabbed and killed.
According to witnesses, Carter is alleged to have first stabbed Moody in the back as Moody was sitting on a chair near the motel. Investigators did not find blood on the chair.
All three men face the possibility of 20 years to life behind bars if convicted.
Carter's arraignment will be held at a later date.
