Photograph-inspired fundraiser benefits Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions
Paula Reid says she is an addicted amateur shutterbug.
"Just ask my husband," she laughs.
She's heard that to get good photographs, you have to take a lot of them.
So last year, on a trip to Napa Valley, she took a lot and got a great shot.
And the result is this year's benefit wine tasting and auction theme - Vintage Wines & Vines - for Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions.
"It was just one of those things," she said. "I never dreamed it would turn into all of this."
Reid, who is on the Hospice board, enlisted the help of Casper artist Barbara Kuxhausen and the result is 10 artistic images - all remarkably different - in 10 artists' own mediums and interpretations of that one photograph.
The pieces of art are among 18 live auction items at Saturday's event, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Parkway Plaza Hotel.
Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door. Patrons must be 21 or older to attend and entryways will be watched closely.
"They also may be asked to show proof of age at individual wine tables this year," Reid said. "We've never had a problem, but the wine vendors are obviously becoming very cautious."
An action-packed evening includes 17 tables of wine to sample, selected by brothers Michael and David Reid of Poplar Wine & Spirits and Vintage Wine and Martini Bar, extensive and delectable hors d'oeuvres from the Parkway kitchen staff, a live auction of artwork and getaways and a silent auction.
A new scooter will be raffled, as well. Raffle tickets are $35 each or three for $100. If all 300 tickets are sold at the event, the drawing will be held on Saturday. If not, the drawing will be held at the Hospice Tree of Love event on Dec. 7. You do not need to be present at either event to win the scooter.
"This is the biggest event Hospice does for general operations," Paula Reid said. "Of course, we're in the middle of a huge capital campaign right now, but this is a big one for us, no question."
Saturday "plays an important role in providing for quality end of life care not met by traditional pay sources," according to Paula Mongold, Hospice public relations coordinator. "Our mission is to help our patients and their families live the fullest, most comfortable life possible, until life is no longer possible."
In addition to the artwork, live auction items will include a Platte River float trip with catered lunch, a weekend at the historic Cody Court House, a Sunburst Lodge bed and breakfast experience, a bird hunt at Grey Reef Ranch and a trip to Finger Lakes wineries in upstate New York, which includes airfare.
Silent auction items include pottery and gemstones, a romantic evening on the water and a barbecue grill.
Advance tickets are available through Friday at Central Wyoming Hospice, Poplar Wine & Spirits, KTWO Radio, Sadler's Hallmark, Country Charm, Porter's Mountain View Supply and Metro Coffee Company.
