Park Elementary holds active shooter drill

An active shooter training scenario will be held at Park Elementary School beginning about 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, according to a release.

A safety briefing, including a triple-check of weapons to ensure they contain no live ammunition, will begin at noon. The drill is anticipated to last about three hours and will be followed by a debriefing to discuss successes and areas for improvement.

Emergency agencies involved include: Casper and Mills police departments, Public Safety Communications, Casper Fire-EMS, Natrona County Sheriff's Office and Wyoming Medical Center. The Army Reserve also will be involved. The drill will test the responses of all the listed agencies, as well as Natrona County School District's personnel, to increase preparedness and test current operational procedures. NCSD staff will put into effect their response plans to an active shooter; the Casper Police Department will respond to and conduct an active shooter tactical response; and Casper Fire-EMS will respond to and prepare for fire response and casualty treatment and triage.

Current exchange student needs home

An exchange student, Lennart Siegle, is in need of a new host family, according to a release.

He is a straight-A student at Natrona County High School.

He enjoys bowling, movies, taking drives, talking and spending time with friends. He helps with chores, likes animals and enjoys the outdoors. He is pretty easy to get along with, as long as he knows what is expected of him. He enjoys being included in the family's activities.

Course studies communication and leadership skills

A new course at Casper College is designed to help students identify skills great leaders demonstrate through communication, according to a release.

"Communication and Leadership" will show that those who are successful have mastered communication skills, said Grant Wilson, the class instructor.

In addition to learning how to identify the skills great leaders demonstrate, students will also study the theory of why communication skills are important and be given opportunities to practice their communication skills for leadership.

The class will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and can be audited or taken for credit.

Training offers strategies to support children with disabilities

The Parent Resource Center will host a training opportunity for parents, educators and support-providers of individuals with disabilities from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Special Education Services Center, 500 South Jefferson St.

The topic will be "Inclusive Education: Current Information and Best Practice," presented by Dr. Martin Agran, professor and chair of the Special Education Department at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Agran will offer current information and best practices on including students with disabilities in the general education curriculum and general education classes. There also will be an opportunity to ask questions. Free respite/child care will be available on-site.

Electricity fundamentals offered in CC class

A hands-on class that will provide the skills to understand home and industrial electronics will be offered at Casper College during the spring 2009 semester, according to a release.

"Basic AC/DC Electronics" is "great as a basis for troubleshooting before taking an item is to be repaired and a good class for hobbyists who use RC cars, RC airplanes, or any other electronic hobbies," said Susan Franklin, instructor.

During the class, which begins on Monday, Jan. 12, students will learn to solder; understand how a DC circuit and an AC circuit work with circuit components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors; and know their voltages and currents.

The class will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. every Monday, and can be taken for credit or audited.

Web design class begins Jan. 13

Students who enroll in a new web design class at Casper College will learn how to use the industry-standard Web site building program Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, according to a release

The class will cover site development "from the groud up," said course's instructor, with students using hands-on exercises to develop their own Web sites using Dreamweaver. "At the end of this class, students will have a Web site portfolio of their own to show potential customers or employers."

The class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and can be taken for credit or audited.
