The Nicolaysen Art Museum will begin charging entrance fees beginning July 1, executive director Holly Turner said.
Fees will be $5 for adults, $3 for children, and free for children under 5.
"We're trying to be very fiscally responsible," said Turner. "We feel this is pretty low compared to other museums."
The Nic is in the process of gaining national accreditation, which requires implementation of expensive training programs, maintenance and security upgrades, and high environmental standards.
These costs, coupled with rising prices of exhibitions, supplies and energy, require the museum to bring in more money.
"We've looked at it very seriously," said Turner. "We care very much that we are affordable and accessible to everyone in the community."
Turner hopes the Nic will be accredited by the end of the year. She said national accreditation will strengthen fundraising, make it easier to negotiate loans, attract donors and increase attendance and membership.
"It really gives recognition to the state and community on national level," she said.
The museum will continue to hold free events, such as the Nic Fest, as well as a weekly or monthly family free day. If visitors are unable to pay entrance fees, scholarship money will be available.
Turner is confident the new prices won't be a problem.
"The public has embraced all of our programming," Turner said. "We are a vital part of the community. I think that people will not mind it at all."
