Fire crews had the Jackson Canyon fire on Casper Mountain 30 percent contained this morning.
At 7 a.m., the mountain looked almost placid, with only a few areas of smoke as the fire quieted over night. But if the winds pick up, and as daytime temperatures rise, the fire is expected to become much more active.
"There's still a whole bunch of fire in that area," Kathy Jo Pollock, fire information officer for the incident management team, said. "The heavy timber, the thick fuels, there's down and dead stuff."
Today, fire crews will concentrate on the east side of the fire toward the Hogadon Ski Area, while keeping an eye on the Goose Egg area where the fire made a run Wednesday.
Pollock said over 200 firefighters, including hand crews, will be on the fire lines today, with a total of about 300 people working the fire.
Pollock said the fire has burned 9,640 acres, not including the Goose Egg area. Updated mapping should be ready this afternoon.
A total of four structures have been burned, about which Pollock had no additional information.
The weather outlook today is for temperatures in the high 80s with relative humidity of 10 percent to 15 percent. On the ridge tops, the wind is expected to be from the southwest at 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 30 mph.
Pollock reminds outdoor recreationalists to exercise extreme care. Use spark arresters on chain saws, don't drive ATVs in tall grassy areas and be extra careful with fire.
