Recently a California court overruled the democratic vote of the people to impose an agenda that marriage between homosexuals is legal and protected by equal assurance of the law. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Jay Bush (letter, May 22 Star-Tribune) may have a point pertaining to homosexual partnerships but the lack of common sense by State Speaker of the House Roy Cohee, State Rep. Dan Zwonitzer and ACLU antagonist Linda Burt, is overwhelming. Yes, let's put marriage to a vote. It would be the most lopsided victory for the definition of a family in Wyoming history.

Marriage is between a man and a woman for the protection of children. The primary function of sex is to procreate and sustain the human race. Any pleasure generated by the sexual act is secondary factor. Just as we eat to stay alive the enjoyment of eating is secondary.

Man is the only animal that has its young mature in about 15 years. The bonding of husband and wife through sex provides a ideal setting for the raising of children to maturity. The influence of a man and a woman is basic to the maturation and security of a child. Divorce is deadly to the family and the development of well adjusted children.

Homosexuality is not a function in the primary circumstance of sex, that is procreation. Sex outside of the institution of marriage is hedonistic and self serving whether in homosexuality, fornication or adultery. Marriage between a man and a woman is the foundation of civilization.

Families joined in tribal units to disperse the duties and requirements of protecting their young. Governments found it appealing to tax marriage and make partnerships for public recognition and legal obligations. The church, recognizes the value of marriage in promoting social stability and "blessed" the contract between the husband and wife to add a deeper value by the addition of a spiritual element.

The church does not recognize marriage for anything but for what it is, a social contract to protect family. The state can do no less.

Unfortunately, certain segments of society would destroy the family in the name of equality. The Wyoming Legislature would be wise to protect the definition of marriage as defined by the practice of law, society and the church, for thousands of years.
