On May 28 at about 8:40 p.m., I was walking home from work when I reached the intersection of Ninth Street and Grand Avenue. I waited at the light to cross when I heard a car approaching from the west on Grand, and its speed was increasing.
I wondered why the vehicle was speeding up when it looked to me as if it was already going well past the speed limit. I then realized why. I saw a beautiful black and white long-haired cat darting across Grand from north to south.
Upon seeing the cat, I immediately realized that it was too late. The car, with all sadistic intention, hit the cat, and the cat was flung into the north lane (in the path of the westbound traffic).
It lay there twitching, clinging to what little life that it could until it passed away. The light changed to red on Grand Avenue and I was able to cross the street.
I was shocked, and very upset at what I had just seen, and consequently hadn't taken note of the license plate on the vehicle. Another car coming from the north on Ninth Street pulled over, turned on his hazards, and the driver got out to see what he could do for the lifeless animal.
I would like to express my frustration and anger at what I witnessed that night. The driver was careless, inhumane, and seemed to have no respect or regard for the life of this animal or for the safety of anyone other than himself/herself.
