Police arrest two in incident
CHEYENNE - Police arrested two people who were allegedly involved in a confrontation in which a man fired a shotgun at a car and wounded an 11-year-old boy who was in the area.
Hours after Tuesday's confrontation, Terrice D. Brown, 28, and his girlfriend, Dareth K. Kalivas, 27, were arrested separately in connection with possession of crack cocaine. Police reported finding about 5 grams of crack at a mobile home shared by Brown and Kalivas.
The arrests were not disclosed until Thursday.
The man who fired the gun had not been arrested. Police Sgt. Dave Weese said the shooting of the boy appeared to have been accidental.
Authorities suspect the confrontation between the driver of the black car and a group of people outside a house was drug-related. Witnesses told police the driver pointed a gun at the group and that a man in the group got a shotgun from another car and opened fire.
The boy was wounded by five shotgun pellets in his arm and leg. Two pellets had to be removed from just under his skin.
Judge sides with newspaper
THERMOPOLIS - A District Court judge ordered the Hot Springs County Sheriff's Department to release information showing why individual inmates are being held in the county jail.
After hearing oral arguments Monday, Judge Hunter Patrick ruled from the bench in favor of the Thermopolis Independent-Record, saying only in rare situations could such basic information be withheld from the public.
"I don't know of a time when the public's right to know is more important than in the case of when someone was arrested and their liberty restricted," said Bruce Moats, the Cheyenne attorney who represented the Independent-Record.
Until several months ago, Hot Springs County made available a roster of jail inmates, including their names and the reasons for their incarceration. But the sheriff's department began withholding that information on the advice of County Attorney Dan Caldwell, who argued that releasing the information could prevent defendants from getting fair trials.
"This is a victory for everybody who wants to know who's in jail and on what charges," Independent-Record publisher Pat Schmidt said. "It doesn't matter whether it's a newspaper reporter or a citizen who wants to see that jail roster."
Game and Fish moves grizzly
{M3CODY - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Shoshone National Forest, trapped and relocated an adult male grizzly bear.
The bear killed a domestic calf within a grazing allotment on the Wiggins Fork, north of Dubois on the Shoshone National Forest.
The bear was trapped Thursday and relocated that day to the upper Sunlight Creek drainage, about one mile east of the historic Lee City mining area.
The release site is located within currently occupied grizzly bear habitat and the grizzly bear recovery zone, officials said.
