Police arrest shooting suspect

CHEYENNE - A man was shot and killed at a home near Burns and sheriff's deputies arrested a Cheyenne man.

The man was shot with a handgun in the head and abdomen around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities didn't disclose his identity, saying relatives hadn't been notified.

The shooting happened about 23 miles east of Cheyenne.

Within hours, Laramie County sheriff's deputies arrested Wayne A. Shook, 43, outside his home in Cheyenne. Sheriff's spokesman Gerald Luce said authorities took as evidence a green and white pickup truck and a gun inside the pickup.

Luce said an argument over a vehicle or vehicle parts might have prompted the shooting.

No brucellosis in Wyo herd

CHEYENNE - The state veterinarian said all cattle in a western Wyoming herd have tested negative for brucellosis after being linked to a cow that tested positive for the livestock disease in Nebraska.

Livestock investigators had traced the positive cow from a Nebraska slaughterhouse to a Bondurant-area herd in September.

Ninety-four animals from the Sublette County ranch tested negative back in September, but the remainder couldn't be tested until last week because they were on summer range.

State veterinarian Walter Cook said Thursday that the rest of the herd tested negative. He said another 2,000 cattle on the same summer range also tested negative.

A positive test would have indicated Wyoming's second brucellosis-infected herd in two years, jeopardizing the state's disease-free status.

Laramie County boosts businesses

CHEYENNE - Businesses in Laramie County say they've raised $4.2 million over the last five years to promote economic development.

Amid the Progress and Prosperity campaign, Laramie County landed a Wal-Mart distribution center that brought 600 new jobs.

Laramie County also is the planned site of a supercomputer that will be built by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The facility is expected to bring up to 50 high-tech jobs.

Mike McGee is co-chairman of the Progress and Prosperity campaign. He said the economic development efforts could eventually create 1,600 new job opportunities in Laramie County.
