Lummis awaits word on speech
Cynthia Lummis was one of several scheduled speakers who were put on hold Monday when first-day events at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., were limited to three hours because of Hurricane Gustav.
As of Monday afternoon, Wyoming's Republican U.S. House candidate didn't know if or when she would be allowed to address the delegates.
"We don't know if she's been postponed or canceled," said Lummis spokeswoman Annaliese Wiederspahn. "It's yet to be determined."
Lummis had been given two minutes to speak at the convention.
Speeches by President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and first lady Laura Bush were among those that had also been scheduled for Monday night but were canceled. Mrs. Bush planned to spend the opening day of the convention meeting delegates informally.
Man gets 3 years in head shop case
CHEYENNE - A federal judge has sentenced a Gillette man to serve three years in prison for selling pipes and bongs at two Wyoming head shops.
U.S. District Judge Clarence Brimmer of Cheyenne on Thursday sentenced 38-year-old Jeffrey Wayne Doles on three felony convictions of selling drug paraphernalia.
Two of the convictions were for selling pipes and bongs at his Gillette shop, called Hip Hop Hippies. The third conviction was for selling the items at a separate store in Casper.
Doles had argued that the items were meant for smoking tobacco and legal herbs. He says it isn't his fault that some people used the items to smoke marijuana.
Three die on highways
CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Highway Patrol said three people died through Monday morning over the holiday weekend on the state's highways.
Two people died Saturday when the motorcycle they were riding rear-ended a pickup truck about two miles southeast of Dubois.
The highway patrol identified the victims as the motorcycle driver, 53-year-old Dean L. Hill of Green River, and passenger, 50-year-old Kathy L. Sander of Apple Valley, Minn.
In a separate accident, 41-year-old Laura G. Underwood of Searcy, Ark., died Sunday afternoon after her semitrailer rolled over while heading down Sherman Hill on I-80, about 8 miles east of Laramie.
Jail evacuates after gas leak
JACKSON - A gas line break forced the evacuation of 45 inmates from the Teton County Detention Center.
Capt. Tripp Wilson of the Teton County Sheriff's Office said a car rolled into a gas line at the building on South Willow Street that serves as a combined dispatch center and detention center at about 9 p.m. Sunday.
Tripp said officers transported about 45 inmates from the building to a backup holding center in another building. He said it took about an hour and a half to repair the line before inmates were returned to the detention center.
Tripp said authorities cordoned off the entire block while the work on the gas line was going on. He said crews had practiced removing inmates in a recent fire drill and said Sunday's transfer went smoothly.
