Man gets 40-50 years for killing
CHEYENNE - A judge has ordered a man to serve 40 to 50 years in prison for a 1998 crossbow killing in Cheyenne.
Laramie County District Judge Michael Davis on Thursday sentenced Steven M. LaRiviere, 49.
LaRiviere pleaded guilty in January to second-degree murder in the killing of Daniel Lee Burch. The victim was shot with a crossbow, beaten with a metal pipe and then buried in a recreation area between Cheyenne and Laramie in 2002.
Lawyer Carol Serelson represents LaRiviere and urged the judge to sentence him to between 20 and 25 years in prison. Serelson said LaRiviere was angry because Burch had become involved with his ex-wife.
Prosecutor Hugh Kenny said protection of the community demands a longer prison term.
LaRiviere's ex-wife, Irene "Cecilia" Cruz-LaRiviere, was sentenced last year to 30 to 36 months in prison after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the killing. Cruz-LaRiviere said she agreed to help her ex-husband move Burch's body and then filed a false report to police a few days later.
Judge sentences woman to 19 years
CHEYENNE - A federal judge has sentenced an Ethete woman to 19 years in prison for the murder of a 22-month-old boy.
Lila Kay Goggles, 48, was sentenced by Chief Federal District Judge William Downes on Thursday. She originally had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Tyraine Wanstall, but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Wanstall was a Northern Arapaho tribal member who lived in Ethete on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Authorities say he died in November 2006 on the reservation. Goggles is also a member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe.

Feds extend comment on lynx
DENVER - The public will get extra time to comment on a federal proposal to designate more land as critical habitat for the threatened Canada lynx.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said this week it would open a new 30-day comment period after it releases a draft economic analysis in July.
The original comment period expired Monday.
In February, the agency said it wanted to designate nearly 43,000 square miles in Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Washington and Wyoming as critical habitat, which could put the land under tighter federal oversight.
The agency originally suggested 1,800 square miles in three states.
Public hearings are planned, but no dates have been set.
