Presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama surprised diners during a Friday afternoon visit to Johnny J's restaurant in Casper.
"Sorry to cause a disturbance, folks," Obama said to restaurant workers. "I just came for a burger."
After ordering a cheeseburger, fries, a vanilla shake and a slice of coconut creme pie, Obama went from table to table throughout the restaurant, shaking hands, posing for photographs and indulging in a traditional political schtick: kissing babies.
Faye Dressor, who said she was shocked to see the Obama in the diner, approached the senator as he entered the building.
"He's very personable," Dressor said, returning to her lunch. "He looks at you and really seems to be interested in what you're saying. I get the feeling he's really nice."
Chris Crossen, a self-employed financial adviser, questioned the senator intently about the high price of health insurance. Crossen, 49, later told reporters that Obama described his plan to subsidize insurance for many Americans, with the caution that it could take at least two years to implement.
Crossen, a registered independent, said he wanted more details. "I'm undecided," he said of his voting intentions.
At a nearby table, Jeanette Clark, a social worker at a privately run substance-abuse center, received a handshake and an autograph from Obama.
But in an interview, she said she will vote for Clinton.
"She's trying to make a difference," Clark said. "I think it would be wonderful to have a woman as president."
Many patrons at the crowded diner applauded Obama and wished him luck. But he made a slip of the tongue on his way out.
Noting the sunshine, he called out to reporters, "It's really nice in Wisconsin." Immediately catching his gaffe, Obama added, "and Wyoming!"
