The University of Wyoming on Tuesday announced a new program educators said would increase career opportunities for Wyoming workers.

The university, with help from the state's community colleges, will offer a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in organizational leadership.

The degree is meant to help someone who has an Associate of Applied Science degree and at least two years of work experience move up into leadership and management positions, according to a news release.

People with applied science degrees might work in manufacturing, auto mechanics, computer science, construction, animal science and other fields.

A BAS degree is not currently offered anywhere in Wyoming, said Laurie Bonini with UW.

"It really is geared toward people who have been out there working and need a bachelor's in order to further their careers and move up to management," she said.

A few students have already enrolled but the program is expected to gain steam in the spring semester.

It will be offered only through distance learning technology and is intended to be flexible to meet the schedules of working students.

The program will likely take a student three years to complete on a part-time basis.
