CHEYENNE - Sen. Barack Obama picked up a fifth Wyoming superdelegate Tuesday, leaving just one uncommitted Wyoming delegate to the national convention for Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to battle over.
Obama won seven pledged delegates from state party caucuses held in March, while Clinton won five pledged delegates.
Wyoming also has six superdelegates, largely party leaders and elected officials, who can vote however they please at this summer's national Democratic convention in Denver. Five of the six superdelegates have committed to Obama.
Nationally, Obama has 1,978 delegates - 48 short of the nomination - and Clinton has 1,780.
Superdelegate Nancy Drummond of Sheridan said Tuesday she decided to commit to Obama after this past weekend's state Democratic convention in Jackson.
Drummond, the vice chairwoman of the state party, said she vacillated between supporting Obama or Clinton as the campaign unfolded.
"I think they're both incredible candidates, and I don't think that this country would be at a loss if either side were nominated," she said in a telephone interview.
Drummond said she was heavily lobbied by both candidates.
"We turned off the house phone, which has been like heaven," she said. "Every day my computer gets full pretty much, 30 to 35 e-mails, and then I get letters in the mail. So it's been very interesting."
Someone from the Clinton campaign called Tuesday morning asking her to wait until June 4 before endorsing someone, she said.
"You could have a new reason every day to wait until June 4," Drummond said. "…I mean, the folks of Wyoming were quite clear what they wanted, and so I have to respect what they want. That's the way I feel my job is as superdelegate. Other people don't feel that way."
Obama won the Wyoming Democratic caucuses in March with 61 percent of the vote to Clinton's 38 percent.
This summer's national convention will be the second time Drummond has attended as a superdelegate and the third time as a delegate overall.
"Last time you just kind of were there; this time you actually have to make a major decision, one I don't take lightly at all," she said.
While this campaign for the Democratic nomination has been "way different" because of the intense competition for delegate votes, Drummond said, it has resulted in one good thing for her.
"We decided we're going to keep the phone off," she said. "We kind of like not having it."
