WHEATLAND - The four-person staff of embattled Platte County Attorney Mary Eikenberry resigned on Monday, and all but one of the employees were released from their duties effective immediately.
Legal assistants Tillie Routh and Rhonda Stumbough, and staff members Ann "Patricia" Meads and Gloria Mathis, gave Eikenberry notice that they were resigning, Mathis confirmed Monday. She said she is now the only one working in the office during a transition period until new staff is hired.
Mathis said Eikenberry would not comment to the media. Meads would not comment on her resignation, saying, "This is between Mary and myself."
Platte County Commission Chairman Joe Reichardt said Monday he had heard there was some discontent in the county attorney's office, but nothing to the extent that the whole staff had resigned.
"We have a meeting tomorrow, and I'm sure we will be talking about it then and find out what happened," he said, declining to comment further.
Eikenberry has been serving as county attorney since the first of the year after defeating incumbent Eric Alden in last year's Republican primary election.
After hearing complaints from county residents about several criminal charges being dismissed, the county commissioners in March visited Wyoming Attorney General Pat Crank, who recommended they hire an investigator to help determine Eikenberry's competence for the job. They also approved the hiring of Stumbough and Routh to help Eikenberry get caught up.
Since then, Eikenberry has stalled the commissioners in beginning the investigation that Crank recommended. She told commissioners at their last regular meeting that she didn't know of any specific complaints against her.
Eikenberry has hired Cheyenne attorney Bruce Moats to represent her, and on Friday she did grant the commission permission to obtain other counsel for legal advice, but refused to authorize the commission to hire an attorney to investigate her job performance.
Moats did not return phone calls made to his office for comment on Monday's resignations.
According to Platte County Circuit Court, some 46 criminal cases have been dismissed by Eikenberry since she took office.
