LARAMIE(AP) - The parents of one of the victims of last summer's double homicide/suicide in Laramie say they are pleased with steps the University of Wyoming has taken to improve campus safety.
"We are pleased with what they are doing and that they are involving us as well," said Shelley Towler, mother of Adam Towler, who was killed along with Amber Carlson by Justin Geiger on July 16. Geiger then shot himself. Geiger and Carlson were students at UW.
Since the incident, some university policies have already changed. Now, for instance, students are not allowed to carry weapons on campus, though Wyoming law allows its citizens to carry unconcealed weapons with a permit.
And according to a report on university safety submitted earlier this month by Sara Axelson, UW vice president of student affairs, the university has implemented a policy of parental notification as a means of intervening in student alcohol or substance abuse problems when the student's behavior demonstrates a risk of harm to self or others or a pattern of repeat offenses.
The university has also adopted a new policy, according to Axelson, to notify parents of offenses involving illegal or unauthorized possession of weapons and offenses against persons. The dean of students will determine when parental notification is necessary, based on a review of the specific situation and circumstance of the offense, the report said.
