Clinton "Clint" McGregor Dunning, 84, of Lander, passed away on Tuesday July 7, 2009, at the Laramie Care Center in Laramie, WY. Born in Evanston on November 17, 1924, he was the son of Emma McQueen Dunning and William Dunning. After
graduating from Evanston High School in 1942, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad, then joined the US Army where he served in WWII, completing his service in 1946. Clint married Helen Gustafson in 1947, and soon after welcomed daughters Kee and Kori. He attended the University of Wyoming earning a B.A. in Education as well as a Master's degree in History. He was an educator throughout Wyoming working in Wheatland, Powell, Big Piney and Lander. He served 23 years as the Principal at North Elementary in Lander. Clint was passionate
about civic duty, serving on the city council in 1963 as well as Mayor of Lander from 1965-1970. In 1971, he became an active city volunteer fireman and also served five years on the volunteer firemen's retirement board. Clint was a state director of the American Cancer society for three years, served three years on Governor's crime commission and seven years on the Fremont County Welfare Board. He remained active as a school board member, a Shriner and volunteered at the Lander Food Bank. Clint enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in Atlantic City. He loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling,
and golfing…simply being outdoors in Wyoming. He participated in the annual "one shot" antelope hunt in Lander. Clint traveled throughout his retirement, touring the US, Australia and Europe.
He was an avid reader, especially interested in history. He cherished friends and family, always socializing and displaying his keen sense of humor. Fundamental beliefs in hard work, discipline and the value of education inspired his commitment to public service. Clint touched many lives as an educator and appreciated sharing memories during visits from past students and colleagues. He was vibrant, intelligent and well loved.
He is survived by his wife, Helen "Gus" Dunning of Lander; daughters, Kee Dunning of Billings, Mt and Kori Thornhill of Laramie, John Dougall of Australia (Fay); granddaughters, Cassidee and Laurel Thornhill; as well as beloved family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and Earl.
A celebration of life to honor Clint will be held in Lander on Saturday, July 18, 2009. Beginning at noon, the Lander Volunteer Fire Department will host a BBQ at the drill field located on Fremont Street.
