LARAMIE - The decision might have to wait.

The quarterback controversy doesn't appear to be ending any time soon.

Wyoming coach Joe Glenn had penciled the opening scrimmage and the end of the week as the deadline to name a starter under center, but Wednesday night's uneven, touchdown-less performance at War Memorial Stadium turned an eraser on those plans.

"I don't know how you make a decision based on what we did (Wednesday)," Glenn said. "(We'll go) until somebody separates.

"If they don't separate, what do you do then? You probably play a couple guys. Nobody wants to do that."

The couple guys the Cowboys are considering did little to distinguish themselves against the No. 2 defense, though neither Karsten Sween nor Dax Crum really had many chances.

The UW offense leaned heavily on the running game - Sween attempted just two passes to Crum's seven - and when the Cowboys did air it out, they rarely went downfield.

Fumbled snaps, penalties and shaky pass protection didn't help matters much either.

"When you go ones against twos, your ones should win," Glenn said. "They're just flat. They came out not ready to play. They didn't show me any emotion at all. None.

"We've got two guys fighting for a starting position at quarterback and I didn't feel any rah-rah, any pizzazz from that. I don't see how you can name a quarterback after what I saw."

New offensive coordinator Bob Cole said he'd still like to make a decision by Friday, but the Cowboys hardly learned anything they didn't already know.

Sween operated the huddle efficiently and had no problems with the new 40-second play clock, but he was also hardly on the field after fumbling a snap on his first drive and then inheriting a 2nd-and-23 after a busted trick play.

Crum led the only scoring drive late in the session, a 13-play series that featured an athletic reception by Greg Bolling and heavy doses of running backs Wynel Seldon and Devin Moore.

But even that was somewhat marred by the junior college transfer missing a wide-open Bolling on third down inside the 10-yard line, which visibly bothered Glenn.

If nothing else, Cole at least made clear the new offense will look to establish the ground game no matter who is taking the snaps.

"At this point in fall camp, we pretty much know each other and what we're going to do," Cole said. "The (defense) know we're going to run the ball a certain way at a certain time, and we were still getting three or four yards."

Moore broke loose for more than that a few times, incorporating his shifty moves into his improving north-south running style.

Darius Terry also had an impressive scrimmage, looking like a more than viable third option behind Seldon. But the running lanes started to tighten as the scrimmage progressed without much threat in the passing game.

"If we're going to be good here, we're going to have to run the ball," Cole said. "We can't abandon it and say, 'We didn't have a good game, we should switch to something else.'

"We've got to stay the course and get after it."

First, though, they might have to alter the one leading to a decision at quarterback.

Nobody appears to have taken control of the ship.

Cowboys Tracker

WEDNESDAY: Wyoming had its first scrimmage of fall camp, one the coaching staff hoped would settle the uncertain quarterback situation. Instead, it left more questions than answers after a touchdown-less evening at War Memorial Stadium.

HOLD THAT THOUGHT: Cowboys coach Joe Glenn had tabbed Friday as the deadline for naming a starter, but he was less than pleased with the play of Dax Crum and Karsten Sween.

The competition might now continue until next week, though offensive coordinator Bob Cole said he'd still prefer to pick a starter Friday.

NUMBERS GAME: By Cole's count, UW had "15 or 16 plays that didn't have chance" as they struggled with penalties, fumbles and pass protection.

HE SAID IT: "I don't know how you make a decision based on what we did (Wednesday)." - Glenn.

TODAY: The Cowboys will grade film of the scrimmage and practice again this afternoon.
