Source: Dietz considers T-Birds, not playing
Plenty of questions remain.
Answers don't appear to be coming anytime soon.
Michael Dietz, the Equality State's Gatorade Player of the Year, left the Wyoming men's basketball program on Monday after just three days of summer school.
Dietz hasn't returned numerous calls and voicemails left since and his former high school and AAU coaches aren't talking, either.
A source close to Dietz said Thursday that Dietz is burned out and considering giving up basketball, at least for this season.
The source, who said they had spoken to Dietz and others involved in the situation this week, said the former Natrona County player may enroll at Casper College but hasn't indicated he would like to play with the Thunderbirds.
UW coach Heath Schroyer - who was in Casper for a youth camp Wednesday and Thursday - is speaking, but only about the future.
The Cowboys have submitted the paperwork to open the scholarship that Dietz vacated, and officials should know in the next couple of weeks whether it will be available for the upcoming season.
"We've applied for it and we're hoping to hear in the next week or so that we get it back," Schroyer said.
Even if they do, the third-year coach isn't married to adding a late signee.
"If there's something late that pops up that can make our program better right away or in the next couple years, we'll jump on it," Schroyer said. "If not, we'll hold it and go into next year with two scholarships instead of one."
Schroyer returned to Laramie Thursday afternoon and continued to offer no further comments on Dietz's departure other than to wish the would-be freshman the best of luck in the future.
With few other answers from any of the parties involved, what that future holds is anyone's guess.
