The far right column in the soccer standings could soon disappear for Wyoming high school teams.
The Wyoming High School Activities Association will meet today for its second board of directors meeting to discuss a regular season soccer overtime proposal.
WHSAA Associate Commissioner Trevor Wilson said the proposal would allow penalty kicks to decide the winning team during regular season soccer contests.
"We play overtime always in varsity contests, but we never go to the penalty shots [during regular season games]," Wilson said. "So this proposal is to add that process to our [regular season] overtime."
Under current WHSAA rules, any postseason game that remained tied after the two 10-minute overtime periods would then be decided by penalty kicks. Regular season games, however, simply ended in a tie. Wilson said the proposal was suggested by Jackson High School.
"They thought it would be a good idea," Wilson said. "If we're going to do it in postseason play, let's let these kids get used to it in regular season play."
The overtime proposal will also have an impact on another item on the board's agenda. By instituting the overtime penalty kick procedures, the board will also look at how soccer conference standings are tallied.
"The soccer conference standings [item] will be whether we play overtime [penalty kicks] or not in regular season games and then to modify the point system," Wilson said.
The board will also discuss second-reading items regarding summer football camp contact rules and unsportsmanlike conduct procedures for final contests of a season, both of which were clarifications to current items in the WHSAA handbook.
