Glenrock will make third straight championship appearance
GLENROCK -- The cut on the bridge of Dustin Worthington's nose was nothing new for the Glenrock senior.
"[It's] from my helmet," Worthington said. "Every game."
And the Herders senior stuffing of the stat sheet Friday night at Sheldon Henderson Stadium was nothing new for the Glenrock football team, either. Worthington -- a converted tight end, no less -- ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the Herders' 28-7 win over Greybull in a Wyoming State High School Football Class 2A Championship semifinal.
"Our running back got hurt a few weeks back, so we needed someone at running back," said Worthington, who also added 28 receiving yards, an interception and fumble recovery to his stat line. "And he went to tight end, so we kind of made that adjustment."
Glenrock (10-0) took early control in dominating first quarter. The Herders built a 14-0 lead behind touchdown runs of three and two yards by Worthington and controlled the ball for 9 minutes, 59 seconds of the opening quarter.
"We had three plays in the first quarter," Greybull coach John Cundall said, while Glenrock ran 24. "We had to move the ball a little better than we did."
Greybull (8-2) did find a little offensive success in the second quarter, but turnovers doomed the Buffs this time around. Worthington ended Greybull's first two drives with an interception and a fumble recovery, respectively, and Kyle Farley one-yard touchdown run gave Glenrock a 22-0 lead with 4:41 left in the half.
The Buffs put a drive together, down to the Glenrock 13-yard line before another fumble killed the drive. But the Herders gave the ball right back and two plays later, Buffs junior quarterback Clay Cundall found Frazier on a 15-yard flag route for a touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half.
"We just came out and popped them in the mouth," Worthington said of the first half. "It was a great feeling and I'm glad we did it, because they didn't want to play anymore in the second half."
Glenrock had a chance to put the game away early in the fourth quarter, but a fumble inside the 5-yard line gave Greybull new life. But the Herders defense held and Farley converted a huge fourth-and-nine on the ensuing drive, which ended in an Austin Smith 5-yard touchdown run and a 28-7 lead with 4:36 left.
The Buffs drove to the Glenrock 13-yard line again, but the drive stalled on fourth down. The Herders kneeled out the final two minutes to earn their third straight appearance in the 2A title game, this year against East Conference foe Thermopolis.
"Our offensive line came out and really established the line of scrimmage and ... all these seniors stepped up with big plays when we needed first downs.
For Cundall, the future is bright, as a young core returns for Greybull.
"You've got to take your hats off to Glenrock," Cundall said. "They're a great team, and we felt like we made great strides this year and we will be back.
"We've got nothing to hang our heads about."
