If the Class 4A state wrestling championships are anything like Saturday's Ron Thon Memorial Invitational, wrestling fans will be in for a treat.
The top three teams at this weekend's tournament in Riverton were all within five points. Gillette won the meet with 198 points; Star Valley was second with 196.5; Natrona County was third with 193.
The tournament could have gone to any one of the three teams, but the Camels had three individual champions, more than any other team, and that was enough to outlast the Braves and Mustangs.
Gillette's Tyler Cox won the 112-pound weight class and was named the meets outstanding lower-weights wrestler. Tyler Juby added a first-place finish at 135 pounds for Gillette and teammate Telbe Storbeck won the 145-pound class.
Natrona County had two individual champions, Briston Brenton at 140 pounds and Cody Brown at 152, and their victories in the championship round may have helped Gillette more than anyone. Both Brenton and Brown beat wrestlers from Star Valley in their championship matches - Brenton beat Zach Walker 7-3, while Brown pinned Tim Hokanson in 1 minute, 11 seconds - giving Gillette just enough breathing room to win the tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
Star Valley was anchored by its lone individual champion (Zach Booth at 215) and three other runners-up.
Both Gillette and Star Valley had four wrestlers in Saturday's championship, while Natrona had three. NC had three wrestlers finish in third place.
Green River, which had Mark Harris win the 103-pound bracket, was a distant fourth place at 145.5 points.
Powell finished fifth with 126 points and was the highest-placing Class 3A team. Trevor Donarski (130 pounds) and Mak Jones (189) each won their respective weights for the Panthers.
Kelly Walsh finished eighth, but had two individual champions in Jesse Hillhouse at 119 pounds and Perry McAfee at 125. Both won nail-biting finishes, as Hillhouse beat Green River's Seth Harris 4-3 in his championship and McAfee beat Rocky Mountain's J.R. Vezain 8-6 in overtime.
Lander also had two individual champions, Bret Klopp at 160 pounds and Cody Brunty at 285. Klopp was named the meet's outstanding upper-weights wrestler.
Also earning an individual championship was Evanston's Miles Nixon, who won the 171-pound bracket.
