JACKSON: 'The Lorax: Original Illustrations by Dr. Seuss' Jackson Hole’s famed wildlife watching gets an imaginative twist this summer when Seussian creatures come to the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Though originally published in 1971, "The Lorax," Dr. Seuss’s acclaimed cautionary tale of greed and consumerism wreaking environmental devastation, continues to ring true.  The Museum is mounting an exhibition of original artwork in its Bison Gallery created for the book by Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, showing the story’s evolution from concept sketch to camera-ready line art.  Although Seuss’s fantastical wildlife - including Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee-Swans and Humming-Fish - may stand out among the museum’s reality-based works, the idea of using original art to probe humanity’s relationship with nature is at the very heart of the museum’s mission, according to a press release. Special fun-for-kids activities tied to Seuss’s art will be offered throughout the museum.  * When: Shows through SEPT. 7. * Where: National Museum of Wildlife Art. * Cost: Admission is $10 adults, $5 for children. * Information: www.wildlifeart.org.

'Tea House, Yu Garden, Shanghai,' by Michael Flicek. Casper artist chosen for photo exhibit An image from Casper photographer Michael Flicek's 2009 photography portfolio of Traditional Chinese Architecture was accepted into the juried photography exhibition “Far From Home" in Vermont. Forty-six photos were chosen from more than 300 submissions to be shown at Photoplace Gallery in Middlebury, Vt., in August and September. The exhibition presents images of people and places as seen from a visitor's perspective, according to a release. Flicek's photo, "Tea House, Yu Garden, Shanghai," was taken during the artist's trips to four China cities in spring and early summer 2008. China continues to value, preserve and rebuild traditional structures like the tea house in the photo, Flicek wrote in a release. The architecture depicted in Flicek's portfolio arose from a distinctly Asian culture prior to a time when western influences had first encroached upon China. In cities like Shanghai and Wuhan, located along waterways that were first explored by European shipping interests, the early influences of globalization on China's architecture are not hard to find. More recently, as construction cranes from all over the world found their way to China's cities, globalization's march is clearly evident. "After traveling halfway around the world and being far from home, it should not be surprising that I would be drawn to the traditional Asian architecture," Flicek wrote in a statement. "After all, one of the attractions of traveling is the opportunity to soak up the culture of foreign places, and, in a way it is sad that cultures in foreign places today must seem much less exotic than they would have in the not too distant past. Whatever benefits might derive from globalization, there is clearly a price to pay for its accelerating pace." * Exhibit: "Far From Home," on display AUG. 18 to SEPT. 8 in Middlebury, Vt. * Artist: For more on Casper artist Michael Flicek, visit michaelflicekgallery.com.
