    James Butcher, 90, of Evanston talks about his service in World War II. Marching upon a valley north of Florence, Italy, the Americans had to fill the village with smoke to protect themselves from enemy snipers perched on the hills. Butcher heard the bombs and cannons, and watched the Americans fight to take the hills. Then, he knew he was at war.
