As a winter storm rolls into the prarie, Katie Painter bridles her 9-year-old son Thomas's horse before they look for some steers that had gotten out near Painter's home in the rural Moorcroft area. Painter, one of nine single mothers who completed a training program in electrical, plumbing and other industrial systems through Laramie County Community College last June, works for a construction company in Gillette.
