buy this photo John Barrasso, known by many as "Wyoming's Doctor," has enjoyed a long and recognized career in both medicine and public service. He was selected and sworn in to the U.S. Senate in June 2007 to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of Sen. Craig Thomas. Barrasso was elected to the U.S. on Nov. 4, 2008. He has three children: Peter and Emma, both in college, and Hadley in high school. He and his wife, Bobbi, live in Casper.

"My parents' values and beliefs shaped my life. They taught me that the life we live is determined by the choices we make -- today, tomorrow and in the future.

My father constantly reminded me, 'John, you should thank God every day because you live in America -- you don't know how fortunate you are.'

He was right. America is a great and resilient nation.

Since I started kindergarten, my mom would say, 'This is the most important year of your life.'

She was saying that whatever you are doing, focus on it -- do it right -- because the future depends on what you are doing today.

This is the most important year of our lives. Our future is ours to shape."
