Tom Stroock came to Wyoming in 1948 after graduating from Yale University and 3 1/2 years of World War II service in the United States Marines. He and his wife, Marta, were married in 1949, and have four daughters and eight grandchildren. Stroock worked as a roughneck on a drilling rig before starting an oil and gas properties firm, The Stroock Leasing Corporation, and Alpha Exploration Inc., oil producers, in 1952. Stroock began a storied political career winning election to the Natrona County school board. He was elected state senator from Natrona County for five separate terms. Tom and Marta started the Stroock Forum on Wyoming Lands and People in 1996. He served 3-1/2 years for George H.W. Bush as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Guatemala.
"Rules for my grandchildren:
1. Fall in love and get married. Do it carefully because you will be choosing a lifetime mate and you should be mutually faithful and honest with each other for the rest of your lives. This will mean you must work hard at being married and being understanding and in love every day.
2. Grab every scrap of education you can possibly acquire. Select the best schools and seek out the best teachers. Take every opportunity to read and think and improve your mind. You will develop knowledge and judgment - two things that will only leave when you die.
3. Carefully consider the vocation you like and make it your life's work. Find one that absorbs all your mind and strength. Work hard and also play hard. Develop both your body and your mind by exercising them regularly.
4. Try to improve the lives of people around you with your thoughts and efforts. Most folks have chances to do this locally in their own community. Some people can help on a basis that is statewide. A select few will be granted the opportunity to help nationally or even internationally. Make your corner of the world a better place because you live there.
5. Do you best to live by "the Golden Rule" and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Obey the Ten Commandments. They are the basic rules of any society and will assist you in any difficulty. Don't be afraid to ask God's help. With this support you shall not fail."
